Each war makes us believe it is either the first or the last. With the progress of civilization, one keep hoping that humanity will eventually stop killing each other. So what are wars, really? Are they clashes of civilizations, or simply clashes of power? In today’s interconnected world, the very idea of distinct civilizations feels difficult to grasp. And if wars are about power, why all this misery, when resources could be shared more easily?
We live inside this bubble of expectation, waiting for the day when fighting ceases and life can continue without interruption. We were en route to Kuwait when the latest conflict began, and had to remain in another country for two weeks until options to return finally opened up.
Sometimes I think world leaders are quietly laughing, because they can so easily remove themselves from reality.
