Poverty is gone!
Yes.. for a second even I was transported to a vision of a nation rid of poverty, but my Hubby's quip brought me right back to solid ground.
When he held one of the premium position in this country, with the finance ministry under him and if he could no nothing, what is he dreaming to do now? Has he not taken the oath for the only position which gives him zero power?
What lofty words!
Some of our past president have left a mark, specially Abdul Kalam. At least he was an inspiration to our youth. Pratiba Patil showed the nation how a president and the entire coterie could go globe trotting at the expense of the nation. And now here comes Pranab with a gene in the lamp that will soon eradicate poverty! This comes at a time when the rains have failed in almost all states and there is severe drought looming ahead. In Kerala, this is the first year that I remember when the rains have failed. One can only pray that it is only delayed. Anyway, dear President continue dreaming. Some of us hoped you would stick around and maybe become the PM. But you were skillfully maneuvered out of the way for the young prince.
God help our nation!

For real development to be achieved, “the poorest of our land must feel that they are part of the narrative of rising India,” Pranab Mukherjee said to a burst of clapping, shortly after he was sworn in as the 13th President on Wednesday in the historic Central Hall of Parliament.
As he expanded on the theme of eliminating poverty, it did not go unnoticed among the gaggle of Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers and MPs who packed Central Hall that Mr. Mukherjee, dressed in a black achkan and white churidar, took a gentle swipe at the economic reformers whom he left behind in the government that he was part of till recently: “Trickle-down theories do not address the legitimate aspirations of the poor,” he stressed.

Pranab Mukherjee's brother shared this recently: As a child, whenever his mom sent him to do errands, Pranab would manage to pocket some extra bucks for himself. This he managed by asking the merchant to pack a bit less quantity than what mom wanted.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt smart, but the man is basically an unscrupulous manipulator. So much so that The Telegraph called this year's budget The Godzilla of All Fudges -- for making a mockery of fiscal responsibility. Today, the oil subsidy is at Rs 1,60,000 Crores (this sounds like a magic figure) -- and this is not accounted as fiscal deficit. I am not very comfortable with this guy as the head of our nation.

DeleteThat is a story I missed but it somehow sums the man after I hear him utter lofty words when he knows he cannot do anything. Guess it is good riddance to bad rubbish after all :)

Ha,remember that Mr Mukerjee has been retired and the next five years will be paid vacation for him. So he need not fret about doing much.
In fact there is nothing much the Indian head of state has to do . Like the British monarch it is a position of ceremony at the tax payers expense.
The old woman Ms Prathiba Patil was repaved for her servile devotion to the surviving members of the Nehru clan.She may have used the opportunity to advance the resources of her clan.
An APJ or Sarveapalli Radhakrishnan are rare exceptions of brilliance.
So let us beef up the Mukherjee clan for the next five years.
Anil:Dont know who this old man is out to fool now! But then like Pratiba God knows if he would manage to drain the nation's coffers a bit more. An FM turned president will know his way around. He might give this position a new fame!

ReplyDeleteI am no big admirer of Pranab, but some comments seems a bit too harsh.
Easing out Pranab is being welcomed by many people including the corporates for whom retrospective taxations and GAAR measures that Pranab had introduced were giving nightmares. Most of all it might be working well for the coterie around Gandhi family and particularly surrounding Rahul that one serious contender for PM's post is gone. Wth him out, Rahul and co's path is clearer.

Deeps: You echoed my own thoughts until I heard him speak such lofty words on poverty. When he had a chance to do something he never did anything. I think he may give the President's post a new meaning. Let us wait and see.
